Following up on a suggestion made by Chancellor Dick Kosaki at a reception for retirees in the Spring of 1985, one Wytze Gorter sent out 341 questionnaires to retired faculty on September 16th to gauge their interest in establishing a retiree's association. All but five of the 201 who responded supported the idea. All but one of them were willing to pay "as much as $5" dues, and 75 volunteered to help organize and/or operate the association.
The first meeting was held 22 January 1986, a party in the Campus
Center Ballroom, with Gorter the first president. By that time, the FRA
had changed its name to FRAUHM, but it was noted that the "Faculty" at
the beginning of the name and the "Manoa" at the end were not meant to
exclude retirees from other campuses, or retired staff.

its membership holds diverse views on political and other matters.
It, therefore, will not endorse candidates for political office or take official
positions on public issues."

James Takushi suggested that a proposal be presented to UHM administration. 01/23 Telephone committee formed to contact members (about 12 each) and urge attendance at May general meeting. Committee Chairman R. Bowers suggested contacting inactive members as well. 03/18 The Emeriti Center would not duplicate FRAUHM. It would be to get the University to take a more responsible position with regard to maintaining official contact with faculty after they retire, instead of being laissez faire about it. Past President Gorter proposes that memorial recognition be given at the May meeting to members who died this past year.

09/23 Since new officers assume their position on July 1, after the May general
membership meeting files need to be turned over from old officers to new
officers during the interim. Clarified that dues paid by >new members in
May/June would be accounted to the following year's membership dues.
11/04 W. Gorter confirmed that past Board policy was to permit all retirees from all
UH campuses to join FRAUHM.
"Manoa" was inserted in the name in case other campuses form retiree groups of
their own campus members in the future.
01/20 On the deaths of members Ed Barnet and Don Johnson, $100 each to be
contributed to the Edward & Orpah Barnet Fund and the Donald Johnson Fund for
scholarship/award at the UH Foundation and condolence letters to be sent to the
widows by our President.
04/21 With regard to UH Foundation's $25 annual service fee, it was pointed out
that working through the UH Foundation eliminates the need to register as a
non-profit organization and the filing of yearly tax returns.

11/17 Approved subsidy of the Christmas party by $500. A. Niyekawa reported
the results of a survey. Of 240 questionnaires attached to the September
Newsletter, 41 (17%) had been returned. Many of them favored more socializing
and opportunities to keep in touch with former colleagues.
Mona Chock, UH Alumni Affairs Administrator, spoke to the board about tangible benefits
derived by members by FRAUHM's affiliation with UHAA.
The March-May Newsletter included a one-page note on the advantages that could be
derived from FRAUHM's affiliation with UHAA and a "Prefernce Response" form.
There were 24 responses. Six were already UHAA members, three were life members,
and 15 expressed interest in dual membership in FRAUHM and UHAA.

Important Board Decisions and Discussions
08/14 It was decided to change Board/General meeting dates from the fourth Thursday to the second,
to make it easier to obtain UH administrators as speakers. Because many FRAUHM members had
expressed a desire for more socializing, it was decided to use Campus Center cafeteria
dining rooms, giving those who came at 12:00 an hour to socialize before the 1:00 meeting.
Affiliation with UHAA remained unaccomplished; FRAUHM's not being incorporated created some
problems, and the expected benefits would not be forthcoming.
02/08 R. Berger found support for his idea of producing a membership directory and promised a draft
for the next meeting.
03/10 R. Berger's membership directory draft was reviewed, and final format determined.
